Follow-up Activities

The Child Development Institute (CDI) was held in December 3-8, 2000, in Washington, D.C. Its success has fostered a variety of follow-up activities for Head Start staff, parents, and community partners. These learning opportunities continue the work of the Institute to enhance program quality and outcomes for children in Head Start programs around the country.

The following is a listing by region of Institute-related events that have been held or that are being planned around the country. We invite you to take part in future events, and to gain insights from those that have already taken place as you plan your own follow-up activities.

Region Va
Building Teacher Skills in Child Assessment
April 10-11, 2002

This Satellite Research Institute was available live via HeadsUp! Satellite Network, Telstar 7 Satellite, or on individual desktops via live webcast. It was broadcast in English/Closed Captioned, and Spanish.

The Institute was primarily for those who work on Child Development Leadership and included those responsible for teacher monitoring, mentoring and professional development for education staff; making decisions for children's programs; and advising about educational issues. The goals of this event were to provide knowledge and skills for quality implementation of curriculum and assessment in early childhood settings. Region VIII Showcase Project

Region VIII identified six programs to highlight best practices and qualities for child outcome systems in a variety of settings: rural, urban, bilingual, and full-day/full-year services. A series of "Showcase" events was scheduled, and Head Start programs throughout the region were invited to participate. Showcase programs and dates were:

  • April 3 & 22, 2002 - Wyoming Child and Family, Casper, WY
  • April 18-19, 2002 - Interlakes Community Action Head Start, Madision, SD
  • April 30, 2002 - Minot Head Start, Minot, ND
  • May 6-7, 2002 - Salt Lake CAP Head Start, Salt Lake City
  • May 14-15, 2002 - Sheridian Schools Head Start, Englewood, CO

Region XI
The Journey Continues
April 6-9, 2002
Nashville, Tennessee

This Institute was offered to grantees in Region XI who attended a previous CDI. It offered "next steps" and additional information to assist grantees with implementing the "back home" plans they created during the original CDI.

The Road to Readiness
April 15-18, 2002
Seattle, Washington

This session was for Region XI grantees who did not attend either the original CDI in Washington or the first Region XI CDI in Albuquerque.
